The UAE Wage Protection System (WPS Explained)
The Wage Protection System (WPS) was established to guarantee full, transparent, and prompt wage payment to all private sector employees across mainland UAE. The system acts as a digital ledger cross-referencing employment contracts with actual banking disbursements.
Employer Compliance Rules & Timelines
- Salary Due Date: Salaries are due on the first day of the following month, or the contractual date agreed in the MOHRE contract.
- Late Payment Penalties: If wages are delayed past 15 days, MOHRE issues electronic warnings and freezes new work permit applications. Delays past 30 days result in progressive monetary fines (AED 1,000 per worker up to AED 20,000) and referral to judicial authorities.
- Salary Information File (SIF): Employers generate a standardized encrypted SIF file uploaded to their corporate bank for processing.
