Federal Tax Authority VAT Registration Framework
The United Arab Emirates introduced a standard 5% Value Added Tax (VAT) on January 1, 2018, under Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017. Administered by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA), the regime applies to goods and services across the supply chain.
Mandatory vs Voluntary Registration
- Mandatory Registration Threshold: AED 375,000 in annual taxable supplies. Failure to register within 30 days of reaching this threshold incurs a statutory late registration penalty of AED 10,000.
- Voluntary Registration Threshold: AED 187,500 in annual taxable turnover or capital expenditures. Enables early-stage businesses to recover input VAT incurred on equipment, office rent, and operational costs.
